German national rail company Deutsche Bahn has awarded a €290 million contract to build a rail tunnel as part of the Stuttgart 21 project to a consortium bid from Alpine, Hochtief and Wayass & Freytag.

The Bad Cannstatt Tunnel will be 3.8km long and connect Stuttgart central station with the new Neckar Bridge, which is also planned to be built as part of Stuttgart 21.

Construction of the Bad Cannstatt Tunnel is scheduled for completion by 2018.

Stuttgart 21 is a high-speed rail project that will link the German cities of Stuttgart, Ulm and Augsburg. About half of the 117km of new rail line will lead through 16 tunnels.
