Tailor-made overhead cranes boost safety and cut maintenance

Manufacturer of multi-spindled processing centres Schwäbische Werkzeugmaschinen has taken delivery of 26 overhead cranes from Haisch Kran eK for its new production hall in Waldmössingen, Germany.
Crane experts Peter Haisch and Tobias Rehm, together with architect Peter Motzer, developed a tailor-made handling solution for the complex production hall.
The crane systems were manufactured with CraneKit component packs from SWF Krantechnik. The design of the components made it possible to construct single-girder overhead cranes with top and side connection, jacked-up single-girder overhead cranes and also double-girder overhead cranes with top connection.
The crane systems are radio controlled with transmitters and receivers in the 2.4 GHz frequency band. This is claimed to increase the safety of crane operators during load handling because they are not forced by a control cable to be near the crane but can move freely and for the best view of the crane’s movement at all times.
Frequency inverter controlled electric motors provide power to the crane bridges and hoists. A-motors are used for the hoisting movement which are said to result in increased speed for smaller loads, and gentle and precise handling for heavy loads. That means less wear and tear and therefore lower maintenance costs and longer life, the company said.
The production hall has stacked crane runways. The four double-girder overhead cranes with 40 and 10 tonnes capacity operate on the upper crane runway. The compactness of the SWF Nova electric hoists meant that architect Motzer could plan for a relatively low hall ceiling height, which saved time and reduced construction cost.
The single-girder overhead cranes with 5 and 2 tonne capacity operate on the lower crane runway. Again, the low height design of the Nova electric wire rope hoists allowed maximum hoisting height. An energy chain provides power to the hoists. Compared to flat cable, this has the advantage of there being no cable loops below the bridge that are in the way when driving over obstacles or lower cranes.
