Tight squeeze on Chicago tower

Central Contractors Service (CCS) - part of the All family of companies based in the USA - put a Potain MR 605 B to work to keep the construction of an apartment tower in the River North neighbourhood of Chicago, USA, on schedule, the company said.

With its manoeuvrable luffing jib, CCS can adjust the boom to help avoid contact with nearby buildings and equipment on another construction project across the street.

Paul Urbanski, CCS sales manager, said the 35.2 US ton (31.9 tonne) capacity 605 B was chosen for its adaptability in congested urban settings. The crane is hoisting rebar, waste debris and concrete-filled aluminium buckets to heights up to 380 feet (116 metres), and it’s doing so while avoiding the swing radius of the crane on the neighbouring job site, less than 150 feet (46 m) away.

The new apartment tower will stand 39 storeys tall and contain 450 residential units. Completion is scheduled for January 2017.
