Trade association launches UK Plantworx exhibition

The UK's Construction Equipment Association (CEA) has launched the Plantworx exhibition, a biennial construction equipment trade show to fill the gap in the UK market left by the closure of the SED show. The inaugural event will be held from 14 to 16 May 2013, and then every two years thereafter, alternating with the Hillhead quarrying show in Buxton.

According to CEA chief executive Rob Oliver, the association consulted more than 50 equipment manufacturers in the UK before developing its plans for Plantworx. He said the key points from the research were that the event had to be every two years, offer equipment demonstration facilities, have a central location, deliver a targeted audience and be cost-effective.

"The clear message that came back was that trade shows are still an important way of generating business," he said. Mr Oliver added, "It is not about a numbers game. We're looking for a good, targeted audience that will drive business."

The show already has the support of some of the biggest names in the UK construction equipment industry, many of which are members of the CEA. Companies that have committed to attend the show or voiced their support so far include Bomag, Hanix, JCB, Manitou, Merlo, Takeuchi, Thwaites and Volvo among others. Volvo UK marketing services manager, Mark Gunns said, "We see Plantworx as getting back to basics, instead of all these funny little zones and areas that had diluted SED."

The even has also won support from groups representing potential visitor groups. Colin Wood, chief executive of the UK's 1450-member Construction Plant Hire Association (CPA) said, "We are fully supportive of the CEA with this event. Our members are keen not just to see plant in a static display, but also in a situation where it can be put through its paces."

The venue chosen for Plantworx is Stoneleigh Park, a purpose-built outdoor exhibition facility to the Midlands, which features parking for 30000 cars, as well as indoor conference facilities and a small hotel. Operations manager for Plantworx, Mike Coleman said, "Stoneleigh is a perfect site that is flexible and has all the space we need for the type of show we want. It has the added benefit of conference facilities."

The CEA hopes the first event will cover some 50000 m² and attract 250 exhibitors. The event's website, www.plantworx.co.uk is due to go live in the coming days, and the CEA will be holding an open day at Stoneleigh Park on 25 May for potential exhibitors to see the facilities. It will also announce exhibition rates at the open day.
