Tutor Perini wins US$ 133 million tunnel contract

Contractor Tutor Perini has been awarded a US$ 133 million contract to build a 244 m tunnel under New York City, US.
The project – awarded by the National Railroad Passenger Corporation and funded through a Federal Transit Administration Hurricane Sandy relief allocation – will see the tunnel constructed beneath the Eastern Rail Yard of the Hudson Yards site in New York City.
The tunnel is intended to preserve an underground right-of-way for possible future expansion of the city’s rail service via two new tunnels underneath the Hudson River between New Jersey and Penn Station. Construction work in scheduled to start in August and completion is expected in late 2014.
The US$ 4 billion Hudson Yards redevelopment project is located on the west side of Manhattan in New York City and includes an expansion of the Midtown central business district as well as new real estate developments.
The “box tunnel” that Tutor Perini is building will preserve space for future Gateway Project metro lines. The Gateway Project is a proposal to build a new high-speed rail corridor between Newark, New Jersey, and New York City. Construction is planned to start in 2018, and the initial estimated cost of the project is US$ 14.7 billion.
