The Norwegian Public Roads Administration - Region West has awarded Veidekke Entreprenør the NOK 331 million (€ 37.2 million) Construction Project BRU 01 Concrete Work contract for construction of the Hardanger Bridge in Ullensvang and Ulvik County in Hordaland, Norway.

The project includes building two 200 m-high bridge towers, viaducts between tower and approach tunnels, tunnel portals, plus concrete work in anchorage and splay chambers for the stress cables on both sides of the Hardanger fjord.

The work will start during the summer of 2009 and is scheduled for completion in April 2013.

The steel deck and cable works contract was awarded to Danish contractor MT Hojgaard. The tunnels will be built by AF Skandinavia, and work on these will start in February.

Bridge design

The Hardanger Bridge, which is being constructed for the Norwegian Public Road Administration, will be the longest suspension bridge in Norway. It will be a two lane suspension bridge with bicycles lanes and pedestrian walkways.

The bridge's main span will be 1310 m-long with a total length of 1380 m. The bridge two towers will be 186 m above sea level.

The project also includes 2,4 km tunnels and 0,8 km of new roads. In addition the project consists of a new bicycle and pedestrian lane of 0,9 km approaching the bridge.

The sailing height under the bridge will be 55 m.

It will replace the ferry on highway 7/13 between Bruravik and Brimnes and has been designed to provide better transport links in inner Hardanger; better the regional transportation between Odda and Voss and between Bergen and Hardanger and towards Hallingdal; a better service for the traffic with ferry free connection east-west and north-south.
