North American recycling outfit Waste Management Inc has acquired Milwaukee-based City Wide Recycling Inc, which had developed Wisconsin's largest and only automated processing facility for C&D waste materials, which began operation in 2006.

In January 1st, the State of Wisconsin has made it mandatory that all demolition waste and 50% of construction waste from projects over US$ 5 million (€3.5 million) or more be recycled. Waste Management Inc currently handles 8 million tonnes of waste a year and is aiming at a volume three times that size by 2020.

In the first three quarters of 2009, Waste Management committed US$127 million (€86 million) to its acquisitions to expand its service offerings and strengthen its market presence. In the fourth quarter, it acquired Metro Waste Disposal, who's operations are based around Cleveland, Akron and Canton, Ohio.
