Leighton Contractors - Deer Park Bypass, Melbourne, Australia

14 March 2009

Leighton Contractors has completed the AU$ 244 million (US$ 217.5 million) 9.3 km-long Deer Park bypass for VicRoads, the Victoria State government’s department for roads. The Deer Park Bypass in Western Melbourne stretches from the Western Highway at Caroline Springs to the Western Ring Road in Sunshine West. The Western Highway is the main road link between Melbourme and Adelaide, with the Deer Park section of the highway carrying over 70000 vehicles per day. The 9.3 km-long Deer Park Bypass is a four lane freeway with two lanes in each direction that allows motorists to bypass a 7 km-long stretch of the Western Highway containing 20 intersections and six sets of traffic lights. The new bypass significantly reduces traffic congestion around Melbourne's expanding outer western suburbs, and reduces travel times by up to 15 minutes during peak periods. The design and construct contract started in December 2006 and was finished in December 2009.
