Comansa towers from Roll-Lift at Maracaná stadium

With the help of tower cranes from Roll-Lift the Jornalista Mário Filho stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is being refurbished to host the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympic Games.

The renovation project of the Jornalista Mário Filho stadium, or the Maracaná as it is more popularly known, belongs to EMOP – Empresa de Obras Públicas do Estado do Rio de Janeiro – and the Secretary of Works. It is being executed by Consórcio Maracanã Rio 2014. The construction companies are Odebrecht Infraestrutura and Andrade Gutierrez.

Four 21 LC 400 tower cranes from Spanish manufacturer Linden Comansa are on site. Each has a capacity of 18 tonnes and a 70 metre jib to cover the entire jobsite.

The cranes are mounting the metal structures of the tier seats. After this they will be used to assemble the steel cables of the ceiling, which cover 96 per cent of the stadium. The lowest crane is assembled with a freestanding height of 36.3 m and the tallest is 52.8 m.

The new Maracaná stadium will have the capacity for almost 79,000 spectators and is planned to be finished by February 2013.
