The European Investment Bank (EIB) is to provide €500 million in financing to support EnBW Baltic 2 - the largest offshore wind farm to be developed to date in the German Baltic Sea.

Being developed by EnBW Erneuerbare Energien, EnBW Baltic 2 will have 80 wind turbines spread over an area of 27km2, 32km north of the island of Rügen. The sea can be 44m deep in this area, so special foundation structures called jackets are required.

Set to become operational in 2014, EnBW Baltic 2 will have a capacity of 288MW and will achieve an annual output of 1.2 billion KW hours. The wind farm will provide power to around 340,000 households.
