Eurofinsa wins water treatment contract

Eurofinsa, the principal shareholder of IBT of Miami, has won a US$46 million infrastructure contract to build a water treatment and distribution system that will supply drinking water to more than 81,000 people in rural Sri Lanka.

Partly financed by the government of Spain, the project is part of a long-term plan by Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Water Supply and Drainage to guarantee the supply of drinking water to the country’s entire population of 21 million. The project is expected to be completed in 2020.

“At present, the supply of potable water in Sri Lanka is practically non-existent. The water purification project built by Eurofinsa will positively contribute to the social and economic development of the region, will optimise the existing water resources and guarantee a water supply in a sustainable and respectful way,” said Daniel Toledano, managing director and chief operating officer of IBT of Miami.

Eurofinsa, a Spanish multinational group specialising in the development of public infrastructure, will carry out the project across 125 localities near the Inginimitiya Reservoir. Besides building the water treatment plants, it will lay 328km of underground pipes that will deliver 11,000m² of potable water daily.

To guarantee continuity once the project is complete, Eurofinsa has developed a program to train qualified personnel in the areas of administration and management, operation and maintenance of the facilities, and compliance with sanitary regulations for water purification.
