Stage V - extension of transition deadlines becomes EU law

12 August 2020

Regulation (EU) 2020/1040 to amend Regulation (EU) 2016/1628 on Stage V emissions from non-road mobile machinery (NRMM) was published on 17 July on the Official Journal of the European Union. This final step of the legislative process confirms that the 12-month extension of certain transitional provisions is officially EU law and is applicable retroactively from 1 July 2020.

This amendment to the Stage V Regulation extends by 12 months the 30 June and 31 December 2020 deadlines for the production and placing on the market of NRMM and tractors fitted with transition engines less 56kW and greater than130kW. It should be noted that NRMM and tractors fitted with transition engines between 56kW and 130kW are not affected by this extension and retain the applicable 2021 deadlines.

Stage V regulation does not require rental companies to replace engines or equipment already in operation that are still working. New engines conforming to the Stage V regulation will allow rental companies to offer new and more sustainable equipment once they are made available by the manufacturers.
