Pakistan power plant gets World Bank boost

The World Bank has approved financing of US$ 840 million for Pakistan's Tarbela IV Extension Hydropower Project.

The loan will pay for works to the existing dam, tunnel, roads and transmission line to generate additional electricity in the summer when demands for electricity and river flows are high. The improvements will add 1410 MW of generation capacity.

The Tarbela Dam is located on the Indus River in Pakistan. It is the second largest dam in the world by structural volume, and, by using existing infrastructure, the hydropower improvements will not require the acquisition of extra land or the relocation of local populations, according to the World Bank.
