The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has received US$ 900 million in federal funds for the extension of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley Project.

The grant commitment from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is for the BART Silicon Valley Berryessa Extension Project, which will bring the BART system into Santa Clara County.

Construction on the 10 mile (16 km), two station BART extension will break ground in April. A second phase, which will see a 6 mile (9.6 km) development including a 5.1 mile (8.2 km) subway tunnel through San Jose, will follow once additional funding is secured. The total extension will run from Fremont to Santa Clare, near the Caltrain Station.

VTA is responsible for bus, light rail and paratransit operations and also serves as the county's congestion management agency.
