Plans to extend the scope of the EU’s ePrivacy regulation to machine-to-machine communications (M2M) should be shelved, according to CECE and CEMA.

The two industry bodies issued a joint press release ahead of next Thursday’s vote on the proposal through the European Parliament’s Justice and Home Affairs Committee.

CECE, the Committee for European Construction Equipment, and CEMA, which represents agricultural equipment, said the extension could seriously harm the digital transformation in both industries and put their international competitivness at risk.

M2M communications regularly occur between different industrial machine types, for example, on major construction sites or in agricultural fields.

The press release is available on the CECE website, https://www.cece.eu/news/eprivacy-regulation-must-not-be-extended-to-industrial-machine-to-machine-communication-m2m
