Bombardier Transportation has been named preferred bidder to build and supply a new monorail system in Cairo, Egypt.

Egypt has ambitious plans to build a new administrative capital (NAC) 700km² in size to the east of Cairo. The new monorail would have two lines; a 54km line to link Cairo to the NAC and a 42km line connecting 6th October City with Giza.

In addition, there is a 15 years Operations and Maintenance deal with a potential value of about €1.1 billion (US$1.2 billion). The rolling stock part of the order will be developed and built in Derby, UK.

Two Egyptian construction firms, Orascom and Arab Contractors, will also work on the new system.

The order award is subject to contract and final confirmation.
