Tower crane demolition

21 October 2019

The attempted demolition of the two damaged Liebherr tower cranes, part of the Morrow fleet, at the Hard Rock Hotel site took place on Sunday 20 October. According to the City of New Orleans’ Mayor’s Office this was to “mitigate further damage” as the tower cranes were in danger of collapsing.

The Mayor’s Office stated, “the two cranes remaining on the construction site will be brought down in a controlled fashion. Expert engineers have developed a plan to conduct a controlled collapse of the cranes that will bring them down in place.”

However, many comments made across various media channels running video footage of the demolition question exactly how controlled the collapse was, with much of the structure of one tower crane remaining on the roof. Take a look at the video and judge for yourself.
