Chinese manufacturer XCMG launched a new rough terrain crane at the 2020 ConExpo trade show in Las Vegas, USA. The new 60 tonne capacity crane is called the XCR60L5_U and it has a five-section 43.6 metre telescoping boom. With a jib erected, the maximum boom length increases to 59.6 metres. According to XCMG, although it has only been producing rough terrains for the last ten years, the development of the XCR60L5_U marks a maturing of its product offering as it looks to now penetrate what it calls “the high end markets of Europe and North America”.
The XCR60L5_U has large variable displacement piston pumps and XCMG’s patented control valve, which the company claims increases the efficiency of lifting operations. Acceleration performance is good, said XCMG, due to the low-speed and high-torque engine combined with the hydraulic torque-converter power shift transmission system. The crane has a maximum speed of 36 km/h and a maximum gradeability of 86 per cent. The XCR60L5_U’s minimum turning radius is 6 metres.
XCMG implemented a number of energy-saving measures on the new crane designed to reduce usage costs. The hydraulic system and variable displacement piston pumps have been combined with a valve-controlled load sensing system. This, XCMG said, reduces fuel consumption in different operating conditions by between 10 and 15 %. Second, an ‘ECO’ control function is designed to reduce fuel consumption by between 5 and 9 % under different working conditions. The torque converter transmission with locking functions can also improve fuel consumption by up to 20 %.
XCMG said the XCR60L5_U has been designed with safety as a priority. It can automatically self-diagnose faults and the safety system incorporates active alarming, rate limiting and automatic braking functions. An intelligent boom is designed to improve safety by regulating users’ operation as well as improving work efficiency, XCMG said.
The temperature range in which the new rough terrain can operate has been extended from -20 to +40 ℃, as found on XCMG’s previous rough terrain offerings, to -30 to +45℃. Altitude limits have been increased, too, from 1,000 metres to 3,000 metres. Resistance to electromagnetic interference has also been increased from 30 Mhz –1 Ghz to 10 Mhz – 1 Ghz.
XCMG said it is confident of the ability of its new rough terrain following extensive testing. More than 10,000 lifting tests and 4,500 km of road relaiability tests were conducted prior to the crane’s North American launch, it said.
