Aggreko wins £30m World Cup contract

Aggreko and its South African joint venture partner Shanduka Group have signed a £30 million contract for temporary power and temperature control services to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa this summer.

The contract is for broadcast and technical services at the World Cup, providing broadcasting power at all 10 stadium venues, the International Broadcast Centre and FIFA's headquarters. The competition will stage 64 matches broadcast to over 3 billion people worldwide and the contract will involve the installation of 300 km of cable and 30 MW of generating capacity.

Aggreko's partner in the contract is Shanduka Group, a leading South African investment company that previously worked with Aggreko during the FIFA 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa.

Shanduka's executive chairman is Cyril Ramaphosa, the former secretary general of the African National Congress and member of parliament who moved into the private sector in 1997. The company invests in energy, gas and oil and among its interests is RentWorks, an asset finance and management company that undertakes long-term rentals of heavy construction and mining equipment and other assets.

Aggreko already has customers in 20 African countries providing over 1000 MW of temporary power.

The World Cup kicks off in Johannesburg on 11 June and the final takes place on 11 July.
