Another tower crane collapses in New York

30 May 2008

A large tower crane has collapsed in New York City, US.

The accident happened around 8 a.m. on 30 May in a residential area on the Upper East Side at East 91st Street and 1st Avenue. Fire and rescue crews were on the scene and people were pulled from the debris. Early news reports said one or two people died.

First pictures showed the upper works of the crane down in the street while the tower, up to the slew platform, was still standing. An apartment building across the street from the tower crane was damaged, mostly on the top floor.

In March seven people died when another tower crane went down in the city.
