Boom upgrades from Skyjack

Skyjack has launched four new 40ft and 60ft articulating and telescopic boom lifts, during its Skyworld product launch week, to replace existing versions of the models.
The manufacturer is launching products and offering industry and market presentations during its Skyworld event running throughout this week.
It said the new boom updates incorporate its Smartorque system and followed a realisation that existing models were using larger engines than required and the power they did have wasn’t being fully utilised by operators.
As Skyjack explained, a similar approach was taken ahead of it updates to its telehandler and full-size rough terrain scissor lifts. Corey Connolly, Skyjack product manager, said, “Smartorque optimises the gearing of our axle-based system, along with a simplified, high efficiency hydraulics package. So that our new 40ft and 60ft booms are able to employ less than 25hp engines to deliver the same on-site job performance as higher-powered units.”
Connolly added, “Engines have become much more complex and with requirements for more emission controlling devices – DOC, DPF and more. These devices and their impact on engine maintenance can quickly drive up the cost of ownership. Moving to a smaller engine avoids all of these associated costs.”
The new boom models from Skyjack are:
- SJ40 T+ (replacing the existing SJ40 T+)
- SJ45 T+ (replacing the existing SJ45 T+)
- SJ45 AJ+ (replacing the existing SJ46 and SJ46 AJ+)
- SJ60 AJ+ (replacing the existing SJ51/SJ63 and SJ63 AJ +)
Skyjack gathered detailed telematics data as well as engaging with customers, as part of the design process, with return on investment being a major consideration. This resulted in a product line with less sensor and emission regulation components, with the ultimate aim of reducing downtime, as well as reduced fuel usage due to a smaller engine size and no customer issues relating to active regeneration.
It also means that no replacement or maintenance of Diesel Oxidization Catalyst (DOC) or Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) is required, leading to less intervention from Skyjack. And with no reliance on ultra-low sulfur fuel, costs are reduced and there are greater resale options.
Connolly added, “These features taken individually may not seem significant, but the real benefit is that a combination of these things along with any associated downtime will quickly provide savings to our customers.”
