Cargotec turns Tampere facility over to training

Cargotec Corporation plans to develop its facility in Tampere, Finland, from traditional manufacturing into a competence and technology centre. The plan is to strengthen the competitiveness of the company's products globally.

According to the company it will enhance the expertise in product development, proto-type production and testing of yard cranes, straddle/shuttle carriers, heavy terminal tractors and automation solutions. In addition, the development of control systems and research of energy efficiency is planned to be centralised at the facility.

"Tampere is an excellent location for Cargotec's competence and technology centre, because a cluster of companies specialised in mobile equipment, a technical university and other educational institutes supporting competence development are also situated in the region" said Pekka Vauramo, Cargotec senior executive vice president.

"We want to lead the technical development in our industry for the benefit of our customers and improve the efficiency of cargo flows. Investing in our Tampere unit's expertise is essential for us in succeeding in this task. Today we can estimate that after a three-year change process, approximately 250 persons will be working in our Tampere unit, 20% in production," added Vauramo.
