Comments sought on ASME B30.5 revision

19 March 2008

The Specialized Carriers and Rigging Association (SC & RA) has called on its members to submit comments on the proposed draft of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers standard, ASME B30.5. Last revised in 2004, this US standard applies to crawler cranes, locomotive cranes, wheel-mounted cranes, and any variations thereof that retain the same fundamental characteristics. This includes only cranes of the above types that are basically powered by internal combustion engines or electric motors.

A revised standard will have an impact on the operations of many SC & RA member companies. Most noteworthy of the proposed changes involve qualifications and responsibilities. The proposed draft is available at: http:// cstools.asme.org/csconnect/pdf/ANSI/BSR8/PublicReviewDraft974.pdf Comments should be addressed to Joseph D. Wendler, the staff contact for the proposal, at wendlerj@asme.org, with a copy to the Board of Standards Review, American National Standards Institute, 25 West 43rd Street, New York, NY 10036. Fax: +1 212 840 2298; e-mail: psa@ansi.org Please also send a copy to SC&RA: boquinn@scranet.org. Comments are due by 3 September.
