Deportation threat

27 February 2008

Dubai's government has reportedly threatened to deport foreign construction workers that were involved in a strike and violent demonstrations against harsh pay and conditions in October. It was the latest in a series of similar protests, seen in the emirate over several years.

Several construction workers were arrested when they were said to block roads and pelt police with stones.

They could have their working visas cancelled by Duabi's Labour Ministry as punishment.

There have been a series of strikes in Dubai during the current construction boom, with immigrant workers protesting against wages as low as US$ 150 per month.
