Deutz production milestone

Deutz has passed the milestone of manufacturing 9 million engines, since production began in 1867.

“We are proud that, having built more than 9 million engines, we are making a major contribution to the motorisation of the world and thereby successfully maintaining the tradition of the DEUTZ brand,” said Dr Helmut Leube, chairman of the Deutz management Board. “We intend to continue developing innovative engine systems of the highest quality in future so that we can remain a leading player in the market.”

The company was established in Cologne, Germany in 1864 by Nicolaus August Otto and Eugen Langen, who developed the atmospheric petrol-powered engine – known as Engine No. 1. This was followed in 1876 by the world’s first four-stroke engine, named the Ottomotor, after its inventor.

The first petrol-powered engine to come off the production line is kept in the company’s Technikum engine museum at its headquarters in Cologne-Porz. Deutz says it is still in full working order
