A joint venture (JV) between Eurovia, Strabag Rail and Elektrizace železnic Praha has signed a contract to upgrade an 8.7km section of railway, between the Smíchov station in Prague and the city of Černošice, to the southwest of the capital.

The contract, worth €120 million, will cover the refurbishment of track substructure, reconstruction of overhead lines, bridges and railbeds and the modernisation of existing telecommunication and safety equipment at the railway.

Some portions of the line will need to be widened and renovation works of the infrastructure and platforms of three existing Prague stations are to be undertaken.

The project is designed to improve safety and traffic flow, with the speed of trains travelling on the line set to increase to up to 130km/h for conventional trains and 120-140km/h for tilting trains.

The work is expected to be completed by June 2022.
