The latest innovations are helping excavators to become more efficient in terms of fuel economy and power delivery but surveying specialist Leica is now helping the operator to become more efficient. Leica’s DigSmart 3D system - an upgrade of its MC200 Digger 2D solution - uses a digital design file of the site and GPS technology to guide the operator where to dig and how much.

The 2D system provides real time depth, slope and reach information, which is displayed on an in-cab screen but, according to Leica, the 3D version reduces over excavation and marking out. Like the 2D version, the 3D system has a colour graphical display and both systems use audible tones for ‘on-grade’ or ‘near-grade’ indications.
