Freeway, a 50:50 joint venture between Lemminkäinen and Skanska, has been awarded a €148 million contract for the final three phases of the S Group’s logistics centre in Sipoo, Finland.

The Finnish retailing co-operative will use the new logistics centre for daily consumer goods. The development will have a total floor area of 189,000m2 and a volume of 3.4 million m3. Phases 3 and 4 of the project include cold stores for daily consumer goods while phase 5 will be a freezer warehouse.

The logistics centre will open in 2018.

Arttu Laine, executive vice president at S Group, said, "The new logistics centre is extremely important to S Group, as it is among the most modern in terms of technology and IT solutions in all of Europe.

"The new solutions improve the efficiency of daily consumer goods trade and our price competitiveness in the increasingly international market. The centre is also very energy-efficient and eco-friendly. It utilises geothermal heat as heating and cooling energy on a large scale."

Casimir Lindholm, Lemminkäinen's executive vice president in charge of building construction in Finland, said, "The project is estimated to generate approximately 4,500 man-years directly and indirectly throughout the design and construction work."

According to Lindholm, the first two phases of the project proceeded according to plan.
