UK-based equipment renter GAP Hire Solutions used the start of Scottish Apprenticeship Week as the ideal chance to meet some of its apprentices across the country.

Among those receiving a visit was Darren Smith, who has been at the company’s Falkirk depot for two and a half years.

Darren is one of more than 70 GAP apprentices across the UK, almost half of whom are based in Scotland, and who in total account for 8% of the company’s workforce.

After chatting with joint managing director Douglas Anderson, he said: “I really enjoy my apprenticeship at GAP as I am working daily on fixing complex plant machinery.

“Everyone at the Falkirk depot has been really friendly and welcoming and I feel like a part of the team. I am excited about graduating with my Scottish Vocational Qualification and taking the next steps in my career with GAP.”

Douglas Anderson added: “Apprentices are the lifeblood of our industry and I am delighted to see talented young people such as Darren flourish in his role. Apprentices bring lots of enthusiasm, are very willing to learn everything they can about the hire industry and have lots of great ideas.

“We will continue with our commitment to employing at least one apprentice in every one of our depots as we grow and I look forward to watching them develop within the business.”

During the national week, which started yesterday, GAP representatives also will meet potential future apprentices as four members of staff have been visiting construction students to talk about employment opportunities in the group.
