Heijmans and Bam plan asphalt firm

Dutch contractors Heijmans and Bam are investigating the possibilities of transferring their current asphalt plants in the Netherlands to a new joint asphalt company.

The two companies said that the creation of this joint venture would require the approval of the relevant competition authorities. They have submitted a joint request to the European Commission to have the investigation into this transaction carried out by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM).

Currently, Heijmans and Bam each operate a number of asphalt plants.

They said that by establishing the new asphalt company, the knowledge, expertise and investments in innovation of both companies could be combined. Increasing sustainability of the asphalt chain is an important objective, they added, from lowering CO₂ emissions to circularity and reuse of raw materials and semi-finished products.

Collaboration was also said to offer opportunities to make better use of the available capacity and to improve the usage rate of the asphalt plants, aimed at efficiency and better returns.

In addition to the companies’ own clients, the potential asphalt company would focus on serving third parties in the asphalt market. Heijmans and Bam estimate indicative annual revenues of the new asphalt company of approximately €90 million.
