China: Muslim influenced architecture has helped Atkins China win an international competition to design a new airport complex in China's only designated Muslim province. The 30000 m2 new terminal building at Yinchuan, the capital of China's north western Ningxia Province, is the first phase of the airport's expansion plans. The team took its design cues from ancient Muslim vaults to create the terminal's arching steel columns and achieve 53 m clear span steel trusses than satisfy the region's strict seismic codes. The project, which Atkins’ Shenzen office is now working on, includes master planning and refurbishment of existing airport buildings. Construction is scheduled to be complete by 2008.
