Italian contractor Impregilo leads a consortium that has been awarded a € 1.7 billion (US$ 2.2 billion) contract to design and build a new metro line in Qatar’s capital, Doha.

Awarded by Qatar Railways Company, the contract for the northern red line of the underground network involves construction of a 13 km line from the existing Mushaireb central station, and includes building seven new stations.

Two, 6.1 m diameter parallel tunnels will also be excavated covering a distance of 11.6 km.

Impregilo has a 41.25% stake in the consortium, with the other partners including SK Engineering & Construction and Galfar Engineering & Contracting.

The Doha Metro project will have an overall length of 300 km distributed over four lines: Red, Green, Gold and Blue.

Impregilo is majority controlled by Italian contractor Salini, and the combined companies have embarked on a new strategy, targeting large, complex international projects.
