Istanbul – the world’s next meeting place

Historically, success in the exhibition industry has been measured in terms of basic numbers: square metres sold, machines displayed, visitors through the gates. For decades, this formula has worked – and worked well.

Today, I believe that model no longer accurately reflects how our industry operates.
We are living through a period of profound change. Not only economic, but political, structural, and technological.
The construction and construction equipment sectors are evolving rapidly, and the way we meet, collaborate, and do business needs to evolve with them.
Exhibitions can no longer simply be marketplaces for products – they must also become platforms for partnerships.
Welcoming a global audience
This belief has shaped my thinking as we reposition Komatek.
What began in 1991 as a national exhibition serving Türkiye’s domestic market is now becoming something far more ambitious: a global meeting hub for decision-makers across the construction ecosystem.
I have been part of this industry since its earliest days in Türkiye and that long perspective has taught me that if you repeat the same formula for too long, you will become irrelevant.
Cranes, concrete pumps and access equipment take centre stage in Komatek’s outdoor grounds
For 30 years, the message was “Here are the machines – you are the buyers – come and see them.” A pretty good message, but not as powerful as it once was.
Today, as well as looking at equipment, people come to understand markets, to find partners, to explore opportunities that extend far beyond a single transaction.
They come to build relationships that will shape their business for years to come.
That is why Komatek is changing.
To be clear, this year’s exhibition will still showcase the latest innovations – from advanced machinery to emerging technologies, live demonstrations, and operator competitions.
More than that, in fact, when the doors open on June 3, Komatek will be the largest construction equipment exhibition ever held in Türkiye.
But scale is no longer the main objective. A greater focus is now on bringing the right people together in an international business environment.
In many places, an event is considered “international” if just a small fraction of attendees come from abroad. That is not my definition.
For me, international means attracting people who have the authority to make decisions – leaders who can form partnerships, enter new markets and shape the future of the industry.
Why Istanbul matters
This is where Istanbul itself becomes so important.
The city sits at the intersection of Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa. But its importance goes beyond location.
Türkiye has a strong and highly experienced construction sector, with companies delivering major projects all over the world. This creates a natural environment for international collaboration.
For European manufacturers, Istanbul offers access to fast-developing markets. For companies from emerging regions, it provides a gateway to established industry players. It is, in every sense, a meeting point.
New machines and networking...the busy halls of Komatek
Timing also plays a critical role. Across our surrounding regions, we see significant investment in infrastructure, housing, energy, and transport.
Many mature markets are modernising their equipment fleets. Others – particularly in Africa and the Middle East – are preparing for the next wave of development and reconstruction.
These are not distant opportunities; they are happening now.
International visitors will come to Komatek to identify new distributors, to understand regional demand firsthand and to develop partnerships that go beyond a single deal.
In Istanbul this summer they can meet contractors, rental companies, public-sector buyers and industry associations.
Creating connections
This concentration of decision-makers creates something far more valuable than footfall: it creates meaningful interaction.
That’s an important lesson we learned during the pandemic, when many believed digital platforms could replace physical exhibitions. It did not happen.
Our industry is built on trust, and trust is built face to face. An exhibition, at its core, is about meeting people.
Furthermore, at the world’s largest events, the most valuable conversations often happen away from the machines – in meeting rooms, forums and informal discussions.
That is where real business begins and why we are placing greater emphasis on structured networking, B2B matchmaking and industry dialogue.
We are also expanding the scope of Komatek to include not just equipment manufacturers, but the entire construction ecosystem – contractors, associations, analysts and policy stakeholders.
Because the future of our industry will not be shaped by individual transactions. It will be shaped by collaboration.
Companies with global interests or aspirations are looking to form alliances, enter new markets together and share both the risk and the opportunity.
This reinforces my belief that exhibitions must become platforms for cooperation.
In this context, Istanbul offers something unique. It is not only a business hub, but also a cultural crossroads. Visitors will experience a city that connects continents, histories and perspectives.
I want Komatek to be a place where, every two years, the global construction community gathers to see what exists today, but also explore what comes next.
A place where new markets are discussed, new partnerships are formed and long-term strategies are shaped.
If we succeed in that vision, Istanbul can become one of the construction industry’s most important global meeting points.
