Kalmar RTGs for Port of Oslo worth US$23 million

06 December 2013

The Port of Olso in Norway has ordered eight Kalmar zero emission rubber tyred gantry cranes from Kalmar worth €17 million (US$ 23 million).

The 50 tonne capacity RTGs will be used to increase the port's annual handling capacity from 210,000 to 450,000 TEU. They will include the new Kalmar SmartPort automation technology where the driver can monitor the crane's automated movements by using onboard cameras, a company spokesperson said. The cranes will also be provided with a container stack profiling system, a data transmission system and Kalmar SmartStack.

Svein Olav Lunde, Port of Oslo director technical operation and maintenance department, said, “As the Port of Oslo is located in a highly populated urban area, environmental considerations, especially energy consumption and noise level were important issues in the evaluation process. The Port of Oslo is proud to be the first terminal to deploy this revolutionary technology in RTGs that makes our operations more sustainable, safer and quieter.”

Raimo Ukkonen, Kalmar vice president RTGs, said, "The Port of Oslo is forecasting a significant increase in container throughput and has once again chosen Kalmar RTGs for the job. In addition to the machines' zero emission benefits, the equipment and process automation solutions will considerably improve safety, security and equipment availability. With terminals seeking higher levels of cost-effective performance and a safe operation in particular, Kalmar is well placed to meet these requirements with its industry-leading solutions."

All eight machines are due to be delivered within 18 months.
