Larsen & Toubro wins Mumbai road tunnel megaproject

India’s biggest construction contractor, Larsen & Toubro, has won a major new contract to design and build a twin road tunnel in Mumbai.

The project for Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) involves using tunnel boring machines (TBMs) to build a tunnel to connect to the existing elevated Eastern Freeway at Orange Gate near its southern terminal through transition ramps and to the Marine Drive at Mumbai.

The tunnel will mainly run under the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Road and is due for completion within 54 months.

Larsen & Toubro has not revealed a precise contract value for the work, instead classifying it as a ‘mega’ project worth in excess of ₹ Cr 7,000 (US$842.7 million).
