Crane service provider Würzburger Kranverleih und Bergungsdienst, based in Germany, has helped replace an old lock gate using three Liebherr mobile cranes.

On site were a 220 tonne capacity LTM 1220-5.1, a 130 tonne capacity LTM 1130-5.1 and a 100 tonne capacity LTM 1100/2. Before replacement could start, 15 million litres of water was pumped out of the lock chamber. The LTM 1220-5.1 was then lifted into the chamber by the LTM 1130-5.1 and an LTM 1100/2 to get close to the gate.

The gate was removed in three sections and loaded onto a low loader. The new gate was assembled in three sections by the LTM 1220-5.1. The heaviest load weighed 24 tonnes. Challenges during the job included space constraints, especially when lifting the LTM 1220-5.1 into position.
