Lusail

25 April 2008

Sub-contractor Sinohydro has almost finished reclamation, site preparation, and dredging works on developer Qatari Diar’s QAR billion (US$ 15 billion) Lusail development. When complete in 2020 the 35 km2 development will be home to 200000 people and includes two marinas, residential areas, island resorts, commercial and entertainment districts, luxury shopping and leisure facilities, including two golf courses. Lead consultant for the primary infrastructure design is Halcrow, with Hyder and Cowi as sub-consultants.

According to Hyder Consulting’s project manager, Ian Mills, “This is a high-end spec job, and what is perhaps the most interesting part for us from a conservation and engineering point of view is the incorporation of a Wadi in the middle of the development. We have to maintain and protect it, not just during the construction phase, but also beyond. The question is, how? The solution has to be environmentally friendly and we’re looking at some interesting answers to the problems this poses.”
