Expanding on the narrow track theme of the LR 1400/2-W of six years ago, Liebherr has gone up the scale with a larger model for operations in wind farms. The new 600 tonne capacity LR 1600/2-W will be shown at Bauma 2010. It is designed for larger wind turbines up to 3 MW on 100 m towers without needing a derrick system.

The narrow track crawlers are 5.8 m wide so the fully-equipped LR 1600/2-W can move on wind farm tracks from one unit to the next. For lifting work the crane uses pivoting star-pattern outriggers forming a 14 x 14 m base. The outriggers are mounted between the mid-section of the crawler gear and the slew superstructure.

The width of the outrigger base can be adjusted and the pads remain close to the ground while travelling for quick deployment and extra safety. In addition, for erecting long booms, the outriggers can be pivoted front and back so less ballast is needed.

More economical transport is also a feature with the lattice boom system where F, L, and S boom sections can be telescoped inside each other. For jobs without a derrick system the LR 1600/2-W uses SL main boom up to 108 m long with 12 m fixed jib. With a derrick system the SL main boom can go to 138 m.
