Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) technology has revolutionised the earthmoving sector in the last few years and the latest development from Trimble extends the benefits to excavators.

Trimble has launched a new version of its GCS600 grade control system for excavators and is designed to improve the accuracy and speed up excavation, trenching, grading and profile work.

The GPS based system features an in-cab display, which can be used to indicate the required depth and slope, and is linked to angle sensors that measure the relationship between the body, boom, stick and bucket. This information is used to determine where the cutting edge should be, based on the original site plan, and guides the operator without the need to refer to paper plans or stakes.

If the system is used with a laser grade rod and laser receiver, the operator can control and carry out the operation without a grade checker or labourer in the ditch, which not only speeds up the work, but also improves site safety.

Versions of the system are available for both standard and tilt buckets, and the CANbus design means that the system is easily fitted and the contractor can also upgrade to the Trimble GCS900 3D system.
