Heavy lift and specialized transport service provider ALE moved a 4,140 tonne segment of a production platform for the Cygnus gas field in the North Sea.

The platform was moved on 168 axle lines of Scheuerle self propelled modular transporter (SPMT). Four support elements weighing between 1,180 and 2,125 tonnes were also transported.

The main operator for the Cygnus gas field is GDF Suez E&P UK. The completed gas field should account for five per cent of UK gas production, supplying 1.5 million households with energy, a spokesperson said.

On arrival at the quayside, the components were loaded onto a waiting barge and then transported to their final destination in the southern North Sea.

The gas field is due for completion by 2016.
