Construction of the CA$ 2.5 billion Port Mann Bridge over the Fraser River in the Province of British Columbia, Canada has started. The bridge will have 10-lanes and replace the existing crossing ins

The Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement, part of the Province of British Columbia's Gateway scheme, now has five web cams showing construction progress on the CA$ 2.5 billion (US$ 2 billion) project.

With construction of road and bridge improvements now underway the five cameras will collect four to six images every hour.

The cameras capture images at five key points along the Highway 1 corridor:

  • Grandview Highway Overpass (Burnaby)
  • King Edward Street (Coquitlam)
  • Cape Horn Interchange (Coquitlam)
  • Port Mann Bridge and Johnson Hill (Surrey)

High-definition, pre-set images are refreshed regularly, and archived images are also available. The cameras are designed only to monitor construction progress and traffic conditions. The pixel resolution of the cameras is such that no private information is collected or stored.

The project is being delivered by the British Columbia government.

The Transportation Investment Corporation (TI Corp) is a public crown corporation established by the Province of British Columbia in 2008 under the Transportation Investment Act to deliver and operate the Port Mann/ Highway 1 Improvement Project.

This structure maintains government oversight while ensuring that tolls collected for the project will go towards paying for the project. It also ensures that cost overruns or construction delays will be the responsibility of the design‐build contractor (Kiewit/Flatiron general partnership).

Gateway Road and Bridge Projects

The Gateway Program includes three components:

  • The Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement (PMH1) Project includes widening of the highway, construction of a new Port Mann Bridge, upgrading interchanges and improving access and safety on Highway 1 from the McGill Interchange in Vancouver to 216th Street in Langley.
  • The South Fraser Perimeter Road Project is a proposed new four-lane, 80 km/h route along the south side of the Fraser River extending from Deltaport Way in southwest Delta to the Golden Ears Bridge connector road in Surrey/Langley. It will provide a continuous and efficient route to serve the port facilities, rail yards and industrial areas along this key economic corridor, and will also benefit commuters.
  • The North Fraser Perimeter Road Project is a proposed set of improvements on existing roads to provide an efficient, continuous route from New Westminster to Maple Ridge. TransLink is responsible for the section through New Westminster, while the Ministry is responsible for the segments from King Edward Avenue (Coquitlam) to Maple Ridge. Proposed upgrades will improve safety and reliability along this key goods movement corridor to better serve these growing communities.
  • The Pitt River Bridge and Mary Hill Interchange is a stand-alone component of the North Fraser Perimeter Road Project, and comprises a proposed new bridge to replace the two existing swing bridges across the Pitt River and an interchange to replace the existing Lougheed Highway and the Mary Hill Bypass intersection. This project will help address increasing congestion in growing Northeast Sector communities as well as address future traffic demands forecast to 2031.
