The wide availability of GPS tracking systems, combined with on-board computers, means a machine owner can find out the location and status of any piece of equipment at a fairly low cost.

Such systems generally relay location information along with data such as engine hours, fuel consumption and any alerts or maintenance needs the machine has detected.

But Bell's Fleetm@tic system takes this to another level, thanks to its on-board weighing technology. By logging the weight of material moved in each cycle, Fleetem@tic can automatically generate statistics and graphs on several measures of productivity - the number of tonnes or loads moved per day, for example - and these can also be related to fuel consumption for a measure of cost per tonne.

Three levels of service are available - light, standard and max, with the max option allowing users to monitor their trucks in real time. The key element to all three is a regular spreadsheet report, which is e-mailed to the truck owner as often as required - normally daily or weekly. This contains all the data logged by the truck since the last report, along with location history and several automatically generated graphs showing production levels.
