Recycling boost hits
19 March 2008
Weir Waste Services Ltd has acquired a Kiverco static recycling plant at its Bordsley Green, Birmingham, site which is believed to be the the first stage in a development of the site to allow the company to recycle both heavy and light waste.
The unit consists of a series stream. A vibrating pan feeder breaks up sticky material prior to the waste passing an overband magnet, after which it enters a KL830 trommel for screening. Here soil and fines from 0 to 25 mm and 25–50mm fill material is removed and subsequently crushed to produce high quality recycled aggregate.
The remaining waste passes through an air separator to remove lightweight materials, with the residue passing on to a manual picking centre for the removal of timber and other recyclables. The remainder of the waste is in the form of clean hardcore. Weir says it is achieving recycling rates of between 85 and 90 %, averaging a throughput of 600 tonnes per day.
Phase two of the development of the site is the addition of a light waste processing facility, which Weir is currently in the process of selecting.
