German crane service provider Riga Mainz brought in a Terex CC 2500-1 crawler crane to lift a 265 tonne, 70 metre steel footbridge over the A6 road near Kaiserslautern.

The A6 autobahn is one of the most heavily used roads in the region and work is being carried out to expand the road from four to six lanes. This made the previous footbridge too short – so it had to be replaced.

The bridge sections to the right and left of the freeway were assembled and erected in the weeks before the actual lift, with the road then closed overnight to carry out the final lift and assembly.

Riga Mainz needed 24 trucks to bring all the required components for the CC 2500-1, including the counterweights, to the site. Crane assembly took three days and was carried out by five Riga Mainz technicians.

The CC 2500-1 was assembled with a 54 m main boom, a 30 m superlift mast and 200 tonnes of superlift counterweight.

The lift saw the CC 2500-1 take the bridge to a height of 10 m, move forward 5 m under load, and swing the bridge into position.

After completing the bridge lift the CC 2500-1 was disassembled and transferred to Ludwigshafen to lift a 13 tonne reactor at a chemical plant.
