A Skanska joint venture has signed a SEK 2.6 billion (US$ 307 million) contract to build the Mid-Coast Trolley light rail in San Diego, US.

The joint venture – Mid-Coast Trolley – will extend the route of the existing tramway from the Old Town Transit Centre to the University City. The 18.5 km-long project will include the construction of nine new stations.

Skanska said the new light rail would provide further travel options for commuters to work, universities, hospitals and retail centres.

The joint venture consists of Skanska, Stacy and Witbeck, and Herzog.

Construction is now underway and is scheduled for completion in 2021.
