Surfacing on the move

Not all road construction sites are close to an existing asphalt plant or demand a higher quantity of material than the plant can supply, so mobile production plants are essential. Mobile asphalt plants have been available for sometime but many were bulky and called for some carefully planned logistics to get the plant onto site. Plant manufacturers have responded by launching mobile equipment which is specifically design to ease transportation issues.
Terex Roadbuilding's new E150P is a highly portable, low load asphalt plant, which features a 64 ”(1.62 m) diameter, 34’ (10.3 m) long 150 TPH Magnum counter flow drum and an SJ-260 Hauck burner. According to Terex, the counter flow drum allows the mixer to run higher percentages of Recycled Asphalt Planings (RAP) than parallel flow plants.
The four chassis plant includes a self erect silo, a four cold feed bin unit complete with a screen and delivery conveyor and an asphalt cement tank/control house frame. “The goal with our new E150P portable plant is to allow producers to make short moves within a weekend,”said Terex asphalt plant general manager David Emerson.
The company has also recently introduced a new counter flow drum - the E3 - which is suitable for use with both portable and stationary asphalt plants. The capacity of the drum ranges from 300 to 700 tonnes per hour depending on whether the drum is used with a stationary or portable plant. The E3 incorporates popular features from Terex's Magnum drum, including the flights which improve mixing and coating of the aggregate with binder.
Lintec's new 120 tonne per hour CSD1500 mobile asphalt plant fits inside ISO sea containers and has been designed for quick assembly and dismantling. The new plant also features reduced energy consumption and produces less noise, dust and pollution. The company also produces similar systems for concrete batching plants, offering capacities between 90 and 240 m3 per hour, making them ideal for concrete road construction schemes.
SIM Ammann launched its EasyMove mobile asphalt mixing plant at Samoter in Verona, Italy last month. The system is built on five trailers and has built in mechanical and hydraulic lifting gear for quick and easy on site assembly.
