Crane rental and specialized transport company Tiong Woon based in Singapore lifted a xylene splitter column weighing 1,147 tonnes.

The xylene splitter column is the third largest in the world and measures 108 metres tall. It forms part of a petrochemical plant that will produce chemicals for many products, including nylon and polyester.

The column was lifted in tandem using a 1,600 tonne capacity Terex CC 8800-1 lattice boom crawler crane and a 2,400 tonne capacity, 120 metre tall tower lift system by Tiong Woon, a company spokesperson said. For the lift the CC 8800-1 had a 54 m main boom in SSL configuration. The lift was completed over two days.

Ang Kah Hong, Tiong Woon group chairman and managing director, said, “We are privileged to be part of the team to contribute towards the successful completion of this project. It was indeed a challenging task. However, as a one-stop heavy haulage and lifting solutions provider to the oil and gas and petrochemical industries, we have the experience and expertise to meet this challenge for our client effectively.”

The work was carried out for construction contractor SK E&C at the Jurong Aromatics Corporation’s (JAC) complex at Jurong Island in Singapore. The project is estimated to cost S$2.9 billion (US$ 2.3 billion) and is due for completion in 2014.
