Waste Management Protocol becomes a reality

19 December 2016

The European Commission has introduced the EU Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste Management Protocol, the European Demolition Association (EDA) reports.

This protocol, which contains the first guidelines on C&D waste management, fits within the Construction 2020 strategy.

It is also part of the commission’s recently adopted Circular Economy Package aimed at increasing confidence in the management of C&D waste. The commission has said that construction and demolition is the largest waste stream in the EU.

The EDA was actively involved in the process that led to the protocol, attending several workshops in the past 18 months through national associations and members of its secretariat.

Aims of the protocol include improved waste, identification, separation, collection, logistics and processing; quality management; and the appropriate policy and framework conditions.

It has been developed for application in all 28 EU countries.
