Pump specialist Xylem Inc has opened a new office in Hanoi, Vietnam, to market its pumps and to further develop its pump rental operations. The company will continue to sell through its established distributors in Vietnam.

Xylem's Hanoi operation will target the water and wastewater treatment, wastewater transport, irrigation, flood control and mining industries.

"In particular, we plan on expanding within the mining market", said Andy Rumary, managing director of Xylem Water Solutions Hong Kong, "Vietnam holds the world's third largest bauxite ore reserves as well as significant coal reserves which supply the southern Chinese market."

Mr Rumery said there was a significant opportunity to grow Xylem's business in Vietnam, where it has been active since 2004. "Our new base will enable us to work more closely with our locally based distributors and partners in order to grow market share and develop sales and aftermarket services opportunities for the business."

Pump rental will also play a part in the strategy, with Xylem planning to expand its Flygt and Godwin dewatering rental business for the mining and water pumping markets.

"Xylem's Flygt and Leopold brands are already well known within the country - through our new presence we will introduce the expertise of Xylem's other...brands to Vietnam," said Mr Rumary.

Xylem said its new presence in the country was part of its long-term strategy to grow business within high-potential emerging markets.
