FCC Construcción – the infrastructure division of Spanish-based FCC Group – has been awarded a €1.634 billion contract by the Romanian National Railway Company to work in a consortium that will rehabilitate three sections of rail line in Romania’s Transylvania region.

Financed by funds from the European Commission, the new projects form part of the modernisation of railway in the Pan European Corridor IV, which crosses Romania. The European Union is supporting the improvement of this corridor, which runs from Dresden in Germany to Istanbul in Turkey, in an effort to increase the speed of railway transport across the continent.

The contract comprises of Section 3, which runs from Gurasada to Simeria, and two sub-sections of Section 2 – 2a, from km 614 to Cap Y Bârzava, and 2b, from Cap Y Bârzava to Cap Y Ilteu.

The works will include the building and modernising of 121.62km of railway line, 47 bridges, eight overpasses, seven underpasses, a 659m long tunnel, 19 stations and 5 stops. Electrification work will also need to be carried out, along with the implementation of the European Rail Traffic Management System.

The project delivery period is 36 months.

These sections are the continuation of another two sections currently being built by FCC Construcción – Sighisoara to Atel and Atel to Micasasa – for €472 million.

FCC’s Romanian rail contracts currently come to a total value of €2.106 billion.
